Cardstock vs. Fondant Cake Toppers: Which Should You Choose?

If you’re planning a custom cake, you’ve probably hit this question: should the topper be cut from cardstock or shaped from fondant? Both can look beautiful, but they behave very differently, and the right pick depends on your design, your timeline, and how the cake will be handled. Here’s how we think about it at Schaffer Print Works.

Comparison chart: cardstock vs. fondant cake toppers

What’s a cardstock cake topper?

A design cut from sturdy specialty card (we cut ours on a Cricut for crisp, precise edges), mounted on a food-safe pick. Think names, ages, monograms, logos, and intricate themed shapes.

What’s a fondant topper?

A shape cut or sculpted from edible sugar paste that sits directly on the cake, fully edible, with a soft, hand-shaped look.

Cardstock toppers: the strengths

  • Sharp detail — fine text and thin lines hold far crisper than hand-cut fondant.
  • Exact color match to your theme or brand palette.
  • Sturdy — no drooping in Las Vegas heat, no softening on buttercream.
  • Made ahead — ready early, won’t wilt, no last-minute rush.
  • Keepsake-friendly — many clients save it after the party.

Trade-off: cardstock isn’t edible, so it’s removed before serving.

Fondant toppers: the strengths

  • Fully edible, with a soft handmade look that blends into the cake.

Trade-offs: fine detail and small text are hard to achieve, exact colors are tricky, and fondant can soften, sag, or crack, especially in heat.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose cardstock if you want crisp names or numbers, a logo, a precise color and theme match, or a topper that stays photo-perfect from setup to cut-the-cake. It’s also the safer pick for outdoor Vegas events.
  • Choose fondant if edibility is the priority and the design is simple and organic rather than detailed.

For most of what we make — birthday names, quinceañera designs, business logos, themed scenes — cardstock wins on detail, durability, and color, which is why it’s what we cut most often.
