Wafer Paper vs. Icing Sheets: Which Edible Print Should You Order?

It’s the first question almost every baker asks when ordering an edible print: wafer paper or icing sheet? They print the same artwork but behave very differently. Here’s the honest breakdown.

(Quick note: “icing sheet” and “frosting sheet” are the exact same product — two names, one thing.)

At a glance

Icing / Frosting Sheet Wafer Paper
Made of Thin sugar-based icing on a backing Potato/rice starch (crisp)
Look Smooth, bright white, vivid Matte, slightly grainy, faint tint
Detail Sharpest — photos & logos pop Good, but softer
Taste Faint sweet vanilla Virtually flavorless
Cost Higher Cheaper
Best for The image being the star Molded & 3-D décor
Sticking Needs a touch of moisture Adheres dry to most surfaces

When to choose icing sheets

Pick icing sheets when the image is the focal point — a photo cake, a company logo, a sharp character, or precut Oreo / cupcake toppers you’re reselling. They give the brightest whites and the crispest detail, and they melt seamlessly onto buttercream and fondant.

When to choose wafer paper

Reach for wafer paper when the print is part of a decoration rather than the headline: butterflies, flowers, sails, ruffles, and other molded or layered 3-D pieces. It holds its shape better, adds a delicate texture, won’t change your cake’s flavor, and it’s the budget-friendly option — great for drink toppers and high-volume work.

The simple rule

  • Reselling or image-as-hero?Icing sheet.
  • Decorative, 3-D, or watching cost?Wafer paper.
