Edible prints are easy to use — but moisture and timing trip up almost everyone at first. Here are the six problems we get asked about most, and the fix for each.
1. It’s cracking, curling, or brittle
Cause: the sheet dried out (low humidity or air exposure).
Fix: store sheets flat, backing-side down, in their original airtight bag at room temperature — never the fridge or freezer. To revive a dry sheet, lay a damp paper towel behind the backing, seal it in a ziplock for 10–20 minutes, and it’ll soften back up. Always use within the shelf life.
2. It won’t stick / the edges lift
Cause: the surface is too dry, or you applied too late.
Fix: lightly dampen the back of the image, and on buttercream apply at the crust stage (~30–60 min after frosting), not after it’s rock-hard.
3. The colors are bleeding or running
Cause: the surface is too wet — whipped cream, un-set frosting, or high humidity.
Fix: use a drier base (buttercream, fondant, or ganache), apply at the right moment, and keep the cake away from steam and fridge condensation. On cream cakes, add a thin buttercream barrier first.
4. It dissolved into the frosting
Cause: applied too early onto wet buttercream.
Fix: wait for the buttercream to crust before laying the image down.
5. It’s smudging when I touch it
Cause: edible inks stay sensitive to moisture and friction.
Fix: handle with dry, clean hands, smooth with a flat hand (not a fingertip drag), and let it settle before moving the cake.
6. The print looks faded or washed out
Cause: usually the paper type or a dried-out sheet.
Fix: for the brightest, sharpest result, order on icing (frosting) sheets rather than wafer paper — see our wafer paper vs. icing sheets guide for the trade-offs.
The fixes that prevent all six
- Store right: flat, sealed, room temp.
- Apply at the crust stage on a drier base.
- Order the correct size so the print lies flat with no straining edges — our Edible Image Size Guide has every size.
